Actor George Clooney said “is a scary time to be the news person” under the administration of President Donald Trump during an interview on Wednesday.
Clooney told Anderson Cooper to CNN that “most news organizations are under fire” from the Trump administration and that “60 minutes” of Cooper and CBS are “selected”.
While the actor expressed concern about the country’s current situation, he withdrew again to Cooper’s claim that America is currently at worst.
“I can make an argument that we are not. I can make an argument that we have had much worse in our history. You know, 1968, every city in the United States was burning and there – the national guard was around the White House and Capitol, and we would lose Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy,” he said.
Clooney continued, vocalizing his concerns about the alleged “attack” of the Trump administration against news organizations.
“But it’s a disappointing time and I think a scary time for many people. It’s a scary time to be a news person, to be in your profession. You are chosen, you know, ’60 minutes’ is chosen. Most news organizations are under fire,” he said. “This usually happens with demagogue in some way. It is usually a way to – the first places you attack are the news because that is how we inform ourselves.”
Cooper followed by asking the actor if he believes “Trumpism” will last after the current president’s mandate.
“I don’t think so,” Clooney replied. “I think it would be very difficult to do this. Remember this: Donald Trump is a famous person. That’s what he is. I mean, he has a star on Hollywood Boulevard. I don’t have a star on Hollywood Boulevard. I’m not lobbying for one. I’m just saying.”
He went on noticing that while Trump is “charming” and many of the people who support him find him “funny”, another large part of Americans not.
“And so when he is over, and he will end, they will have to go looking for someone who can deliver the message he delivered with the same kind of charisma. And they do not have it,” he told the Republican Party.
Later in the interview, Cooper asked Clooney if he is concerned about Trump personally targeting him.
“Of course. Everyone is worried about it,” he replied. “But you know, if you spend your life worrying about things, then you won’t do things. You know, we have, like everyone, a family, and we have a life, and we try, you know, live and make things the best for our kids. And I want to be able to look at my children in the eyes and say where we have been in history.”
